Until the late 20th century, when it was acquired by the Municipality of Chiusdino, the palace that houses the museum belonged to the Taddei family, originally from Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, whose name it still bears. A commemorative plaque, placed on the entrance façade in 1932, commemorates Alceo Taddei, a civil engineer and hero of the Battle of Curtatone, "whose life ended in the luminous vision of victorious Italy," to use the words engraved in the marble.
In 2009, the desire to enhance the municipal heritage led to its restoration. The works contained within share their provenance from local sites and their specific connection to the figure of San Galgano.
The restoration and installation were completed with the inauguration, in 2015, of the Civic Museum of Sacred Art of San Galgano, the result of a collaboration between the Municipality of Chiusdino and the local religious authorities.
In the sixteenth-century building, a dozen rooms now house works from the Chiusdino area. Each piece is of particular interest from an artistic, historical, and cultural perspective.
Among the most valuable pieces are the Madonna and Child by Niccolò di Segna, the bas-relief Saint Galgano Striking the Sword into the Stone by Urbano da Cortona and the imposing reliquary of Saint Galgano, the work of the goldsmith Pace di Valentino.
