Montalcinello is a hamlet of Chiusdino, in the province of Siena. Its name comes from the great quantity of holm oak trees present on the hill , where the hamlet stands. Its origins date back to at least the X century. As a matter of fact, there are some documents that testify the presence of the Parish of Saint Magno , already in the year 987. There’s also a small castle, named castle of Montalcinello. Montancinello remained under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Volterra until the second half of the XIV century, when it passed under the Republic of Siena, thus losing its independence. The medieval structure of the village, with its paved streets ( “chioche” ), has remained almost unchanged, whereas the castle has been altered. On the perimeter walls of the castle, three gates opened up: the Upper Gate, the Middle Gate and the Lower Gate . The perimeter walls had a few heightened spaces, that don’t exist anymore. The village of Montancinello has started to rise again and to enlarge itself only around the second half of the XIX century, since 1855, simultaneously with the construction and renewal of the local road system: Route 541, Maremman Cross Road , that connects Colle Val d’Elsa to the Maremma through Route 73 Sienese Aretine, and the new roads that go to Chiusdino and Montingegnoli. Recently, the area of Montancinello and the surrounding areas are undergoing numerous geothermic drillings for the production of electricity. Every year, the “ Fair of Desserts” recalls to the historical village, aside from tourists, all the villagers that had to move from their original place, causing a gradual decline of the population of the village. The Church of San Magno is located in Montalcinello. It originally dates back before the year 1000, but its actual appearance is due to its reconstruction in the year 1290.
