Written documents testify that the Spannnocchi family had owned this estate since the beginning of the 1200s. In the fifteenth century, the Spannocchi family was one of the most important families of bankers and merchants of Siena and its members continued to play a key role in the history of the cities until 1800, before moving to Austria.
Delfino Cinelli, aristocratic Florentine writer, saw in Spannocchia the ideal place to retire to write his books. He bought the estate in 1925 from a wooded company that had taken over the property a few years earlier from the Spannocchi family and which he resold after exploiting the wood resources.
Spannocchia at that time continued to be managed according to the practice of sharecropping, a system that developed in Tuscany around 1100 characterizing social relations, cultural practices and the landscape itself. The sharecroppers received a farm and the use of the surrounding lands in exchange for half of the goods produced.
Since the peasant population continued to decline and agriculture lost importance from the 1950s-1960s, the estate gradually assumed new roles, becoming the headquarters of the American "Etruscan Foundation" created in 1958 by Ferdinando Cinelli, son of Delfino Cinelli and used as a housing and working structure for archaeological and conservation projects.
In January 2002, the "Spannocchia Foundation" was formed, with the aim of supporting conservation, research and education projects, in collaboration with the Italian association "Castello di Spannocchia".
