One of the oldest Romanesque churches in the area, documented since 1081, it is now open for worship once or twice a year. Its reconstruction in 1767 almost completely destroyed the original structures.
Called the "old parish church" to distinguish it from that of San Fortunato a Murlo, it long maintained the devotion of the faithful for the image of the Madonna and Child by Andrea di Niccolò it housed.
The panel, stripped of its two side panels and the predella, is now on display in the church of Vescovado, after a recent restoration by the painter Graziano Bernini that has brought it back to its former splendor.
Evidence of the great popular veneration is a complex wooden processional carriage, carved in the 18th century, used for her outings in the surrounding countryside.
The building is preceded by a three-arched brick portico; the single-hall interior preserves three 18th-century white stucco altars
