DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION

The terracotta Madonna and Child from the Church of San Bartolomeo in Pentolina is an important sculptural work attributed to a 16th-century Sienese master or sculptor.

Today, the work is no longer located in the ancient medieval village but is permanently exhibited and preserved in the Civic and Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art of San Galgano in Chiusdino.

The church of San Bartolomeo in Pentolina, a small village in the municipality of Chiusdino, was once owned by the Pannocchieschi family.

Terracotta was a widespread technique in the Tuscan Renaissance sculptural tradition, due to its extraordinary sculptural quality and its ability to convey tenderness and expressiveness to sacred faces.

Critics attribute the work to the 16th-century Sienese school, a period characterized by a strong devotional sensibility linked to the Chiusdino area.
