The hermitage, documented since 1189, during the reign of Frederick Barbarossa, is a highly evocative place, despite being reduced to little more than a few ruins, which are now falling into complete ruin.
The remains of the building appear amidst the thick scrub, still vivid in the alternating colors that blend the dark green of the Vallerano marble with the precious pink marble.
Today, part of the perimeter walls remain, interrupted by slender single-lancet windows with segmental arches, while the barrel vault has collapsed. Traces of the pilasters and capitals that supported the arch located halfway down the nave also remain.
The church, dedicated to Santa Maria di Rocamadur, and the convent were one of the most important Augustinian centers in Tuscany. Its construction dates back to the 13th century, and in 1449, the last chapter of the Augustinian congregations was held there.
In the 17th century, the building's precarious condition forced the last monks to move to Crevole.
The panel of the Madonna of Crevole, painted by the young Duccio di Buoninsegna specifically for the convent, was first transferred to the church of Santa Cecilia in Crevole and then to the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo in Siena.
