DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION

Created around 1460, it represents one of the pinnacles of Federighi's sculpture.

The work is profoundly influenced by the influence of Jacopo della Quercia, in whose workshop the artist trained, and by Donatello's stay in Siena.

In particular, the iconographic and compositional inspiration clearly derives from the famous Madonna del Perdono (Madonna of Forgiveness) created by Donatello for the Siena Cathedral.

The bas-relief depicts the Virgin breastfeeding the Baby Jesus, according to the traditional iconography of the Virgo Lactans.

The scene is framed by an elegant textile curtain that opens laterally like a curtain, enhancing the sense of spatial depth.

The artist succeeds in infusing the relief with extraordinary emotional intensity, highlighting the domestic intimacy and the emotional bond between Mother and Child.

The forms of the Child and the Virgin are soft, sinuous, and modeled with delicate chiaroscuro effects, typical of Renaissance bas-relief, which enhance the luster and smoothness of the marble.
