DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION

Oil on panel on two separate silhouettes

The Madonna in Sorrows and Saint John the Evangelist in Sorrows are two oil paintings on panel by the Sienese painter Stefano Volpi, dating back to around 1650.

These painted and silhouetted figures originate from the Church of Santa Maria in Radi di Montagna and are housed in the San Pietro Museum in Colle di Val d'Elsa.

In the museum's exhibition, the two figures of the Virgin and Saint John have been dramatically positioned to the sides of the famous Crucifix sculpted by Marco Romano, thus recreating the traditional iconographic structure of Calvary.
