DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION

The relief of Saint Galgano Led by Saint Michael the Archangel to Montesiepi is a masterpiece of Sienese Gothic sculpture, created by Giovanni di Agostino between 1320 and 1330.

The marble panel comes from the birthplace of Saint Galgano in Chiusdino, where it remained embedded in the façade for centuries.
The original is now housed on the first floor of the San Galgano Foundation, while a cast is visible on the façade of the birthplace.

Historians believe the work was part of a monument or a larger story cycle that has since been lost.

The bas-relief immortalizes the moment of Galgano Guidotti's spiritual conversion.

Guided by the Archangel Michael, the future saint prepares to reach the Montesiepi hill to abandon his knightly armor and retire to the life of a hermit.

Despite the signs of aging caused by long outdoor exposure, the relief stands out for its refined execution of the foliage of the Montesiepi grove, a naturalistic element typical of Sienese Gothic architecture.
