Madonna col Bambino Chiusdino
Artist: Niccolò di Segna
Year: 1336
Current location: Museo civico e diocesano d'arte sacra di San Galgano
Original location: Eremo di Montesiepi
DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
The work was part of a triptych-reliquary created specifically by Niccolò for the Hermitage of San Galgano in Montesiepi.
The triptych, with a gold background, consisted of a central panel depicting the Crucifixion and two side panels with Saint Michael the Archangel and Saint Galgano.
The central panel, which could be opened like a door, featured on the back this image of the Madonna holding the blessing Child in her arms.
The Virgin lovingly gazes at her Son with a meditative gaze, marked by the foreboding of the Passion, which is also alluded to by the red cloak that envelops him.
