As in other localities in the Chianti area, here also there are traces of Etruscan and later on Roman settlements. The most important findings dating back to the Roman age are preserved in the Pieve di San Marcellino. In this village , there are many parishes as that of San Giusto in Salcio, San Polo in Rosso and Spaltenna, San Marcellino, San Vincenti . There are also quite a few castles, due to a very strong feudal presence connected to the clique of the Firidolfi, , and for defensive purposes , as the Castle of Montegrossi, in Lecchi. Anyway, the most famous castle is the Castle of Brolio. Due to its position, Gaiole was also at the center of many conflicts between Siena and Florence. Today, as in the past, the viticulture and especially, the olive culture are the main activities. The production of wine has developed in a considerable way, thanks to the Barons Ricasoli, that owned the hills surrounding the Castle of Brolio and especially, thanks to Bettino Ricasoli, that during pauses in his political activities , dedicated himself with pleasure to agriculture.
